ASKEW: Call for Submissions

Get published by Askew Lit. We are following NPR rules (140 character limit, 3 poems max) except that submissions should be sent in the body of an email (no attachments) to askewlit@gmail.com. Haiku is acceptable, but senryu is preferred. Any topic because who can put a limit on poetic creativity, but judges are looking for originality, freshness, and pieces free of hackneyed elements. Here is an example of an excellent submission that subverts the form and dominant paradigm while managing to be fresh, fun, and original. Look under the cap of the next bottled tea you drink, for there may be a 6 Word Poem under it. And if six words can convey a meaningful and often funny message, imagine what 140 characters can do in creative hands. It comes from a Beat Poet:

walk down city streets
look up at birds overhead
pigeons: a high coo

Mandy Kahn Askew feature, April 13, 2019

Mandy Kahn reads in Pasadena with violinist-poet Deldric "Poetic Moor" Bratcher and Charles Harmon.

Mandy Kahn -- author of Glenn Gould’s Chair and Math, Heaven, Time -- has given readings at Cambridge University, London Review Bookshop, and Shoreditch House in England, at Motto in Berlin, Collette in Paris, Printed Matter in New York, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, and all around Southern California, including the Craft and Folk Art Museum and the Art Center College of Design.

Her poetry is included in The Best American Poetry 2018 (Scribner/Simon & Schuster) and was featured in Poet Laureate Ted Kooser’s column, American Life in Poetry.

Kahn has been interviewed by BBC Radio, Flaunt, and The Los Angeles Review of Books and is the recipient of the 2018 Shakespeare Prize in Poetry.

She frequently collaborates with composers to make new works that combine verse and classical music. She was a librettist for Yuval Sharon’s immersive opera Hopscotch. Her recent commissions include an audience participation poem for the orchestra Wild Up. She was born, raised, and lives in Los Angeles.

THE SERPENT AND THE BIRD
And what’s become of Quetzal,
the round-faced boy who filled
my ribboned backpack
with pornographic notes?

Named for
feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl,
he tucked his downy bird heart
in spiked reptilian skin.

Week after week I saw
his round-faced mother
cross the schoolyard,
headed to face our cool and
lizard-eyed principal.

Once his mother spoke
to me; I marveled at her
charitable face:
what a gentle nest.

She is what I thought of,
finding every note.

I didn’t know to wonder
what their house was like.

I thought of her
too often, with a pure love,
as he thought of me.
  • Hosted by Seven Dhar, Slim FitzGerald, Ellie Askew
  • Pasadena Highlands, Garden Room (askewlit.com)
  • 1575 E. Washington Bl., Pasadena 91104
  • FREE, Saturday, April 13th, 7:00-9:00 PM

Deldric "Poetic Moor" Bratcher, a poet, violinist, and producer from Rochester, NY, lives in L.A. and is a graduate of the Los Angeles Film School. Coming from a family with very diverse musical tastes -- the blues, jazz, rock -- gave Deldric a love of art and poetry. He attended military school in South Korea, where he entered a pageant and in the process cemented his love of spoken word poetry, which he performs accompanied by his violin.

Charles Harmon is an auxiliary Coast Guard and pirate poet who would rather choose a poet's life than be at sea. His comedic antics and food fetishes make him a star attraction around Los Angeles. A frequent contributor to Spectrum, he loves to write, loves to live, and loves to cook. But most of all he loves to love...and eat.

Alivio Open Mic
About: In a community where the sense of community doesn’t exist, Alivio was created to provide a space for all members of the Southeast L.A. region to unite and share their truths, expression and courage. Due to the fact that Southeast is brewing with artists but lacks platforms to showcase their talents, Alivio was a necessity. By creating this space, and inviting a community that lacks resources, a creative collaboration, bonding and community is made possible.

Da Poetry Lounge-Slam!
About: A poetry slam is a competition at which poets perform their own original work, and are then judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience. In a standard slam, there are five judges. Before the competition begins, the host will often bring up a sacrificial poet. A sacrificial poet is not competing in the slam, but is scored by the judges in order for them to calibrate their judging. After each competing poet performs, judges award a score to that poem. Scores generally range between zero and ten. The highest and lowest score are dropped, giving each performance a rating between zero and thirty points. A single round at a slam consists of performances by all eligible poets. Most slams last multiple rounds, and many involve the elimination of lower-scoring poets in successive rounds. A standard elimination rubric might run 8-4-2, with eight poets in the first round, four in the second, and two in the last. Some slams do not eliminate poets at all. Additionally, most slams enforce a time limit of three minutes (and a grace period of ten seconds), after which a poet’s score will be docked according to how long the poem exceeded the time limit.
When: Every 3rd Tuesday: 9:00 pm-12:00 am
Where: Greenway Court Theatre
Address: 544 N. Fairfax Ave., Fairfax District, CA 90036
Cost: $10

About: The Joshua Tree Experiential ARTS and WRITING Retreat: Get out of LA for a 3-day arts and writing retreat featuring bonfire readings by desert dwellers Ruth Nolan and L.I. Henley. Curated workshops like Altered States and Psycho-Spiritual Legacies of the Desert and High Noon Ceremony lead participants through the natural landscape to generate new work in their chosen medium. Work is considered for inclusion in a commemorative anthology. Rather than seek an exact definition of the desert, this retreat is designed to inspire questions about what the desert is and what it may represent for you.
