RATTLE: November Roundup, 2019

November Roundup
Given how much Rattle publishes at this point, and how many different calls for submissions they have, there's just too much content to cram into a single email every three months—so Tim Green has decided to split them up and send an extra "Rattle Roundup" in between.

I especially want to make sure that everyone is aware of the new Rattlecast series, which features a guest poet plus a virtual open mic every Tuesday night. If you can't catch it live, they're archived everywhere: YouTube, Facebook, iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, TuneIn, etc. Help us out by subscribing on your platform of choice—I'm hoping to reach 1,000 subscribers on YouTube soon, which will unlock some useful features.

And do join in on the open mic! The show is a weekly celebration of poetry, and we want to celebrate your poems, too. If you publish a poem somewhere, share it on the podcast, and we'll shout it out. Visit the Rattlecast webpage for instructions on how to participate.

We've had a great lineup of poets from our issues so far, and it keeps getting better, with upcoming shows scheduled to feature Lynne Knight, Bob Hicok, Naomi Shihab Nye, Ellen Bass, and so many more. Each episode is both a poetry reading and a casual interview, and we've had a lot of great discussions.

I'm also including a Top 10 list of most-shared poems from the last two months, a deadline extension, and our upcoming Poetry Day with Francesca Bell and A.M. Juster. We currently have nine submission categories open, so check them out if interested. Enjoy!

Cheers,
Timothy Green

Rattlecast Episodes
#16 | Lynne Knight
Live November 4th @ 9pm EDT
Tonight we'll be visiting with Rattle favorite Lynne Knight, winner of the 2009 Rattle Poetry Prize, about her new book The Language of Forgetting. Lynne has been published in Rattle more than anyone else over the last two decades—experience the range of her work on tonight's show to find out why.
#15 | Francesca Bell
Aired: October 29th
Last week we were joined by another legend in Francesca Bell, winner of the 2014 Neil Postman Award, who has also appeared in many issues of Rattle over the years. Francesca joined us from a fire-ravaged Northern California, and we talked about fires, snakes, God, parenting, and more as she read from her debut collection, Bright Stain. The episode also features seven poets on the open mic.
#14 | Janet Fitch
Aired: October 22nd
Episode #14 featured novelist Janet Fitch. Janet is probably best known for her international bestseller, White Oleander, but her two most recent novels are about a group of poets during the Russian Revolution. We talked about poetry's role in Russian history, and Janet read the original poetry she'd written for her characters.
#13 | Aaron Poochigian
Aired: October 15th
For episode #13, we went from novels full of verse to a novel in verse, featuring Aaron Poochigian and his Beowulf-inspired poem noir, Mr. Either/Or. We discussed the obstacles and benefits to writing narrative verse, and Aaron read strong and entertaining selections from the book. We were also joined by another seven open mic poets.
#12 | Bro. Yao (Hoke S. Glover III)
Aired: October 8th
Episode #12 featured Bro. Yao (Hoke S. Glover III) and his powerful book about family and history, Inheritance. We talked about fathers, names, and Chinese philosophy, in between an excellent reading from the book. After Bro Yao, six poets joined in on the open mic.
#11 | Jamey Hecht
Aired: October 1st
Episode #11 featured Jamey Hecht, who had two sonnets appear in Rattle #65. A professional psychoanalyst and Shakespearean actor, he read from his new book Dodo Feathers, and we discussed metered verse, mental health, neuroscience, and the deep state.

Poetry Day at the Hen House
Of local interest only, our next pop-up Poetry Day is coming this Saturday—a kind of poetry salon featuring workshops and readings by Francesca Bell and A.M. Juster. We plan on doing this a few times a year at various locations in and around Southern California, and this fall's Poetry Day is being held at the new Red Hen Press office and literary center. The workshop sessions have both sold out, but everyone is still welcome to join us for the free reading and open mic in the afternoon, and we would love to see you there!
2020 Rattle Young Poets Anthology
Deadline: November 15th
The deadline for the 2020 Rattle Young Poets Anthology has been extended by a month to November 15th! The annual RYPA is now a chapbook anthology shipped for free to all Rattle subscribers along with the summer issue of the magazine. It's a great opportunity for young poets, so if you know any, please help them submit! Parents, teachers, or the poets themselves may submit online through Submittable.
2020 Rattle Chapbook Prize
Deadline: January 15th
The Rattle Chapbook Prize is back for 2020 and better than ever, with over twice the prize money and three guaranteed winners—at least one of whom will be a poet who has never published a book. After four years, we've proven the concept of including a chapbook with each issue of the magazine, so it was time to raise the stakes. As always, the entry fee is just a one-year subscription/extension, and we're open for submissions.
